AI generates a prompt marketplace

The Future. A new marketplace called PromptBase sells prompts for AI-art-and-text generators that can reliably give users the outputs they want — a key aspect of generating creations that aren’t, well, just abstract blobs. With the possibility of many jobs being disrupted by the onset of AI, one of the most important jobs of the future — at least according to PromptBase founder Ben Stokes — could be a well-trained prompt engineer.

eBay for AI
There’s a certain skill to getting AI to generate what you want… and people are now willing to pay for the craft.

  • PromptBase is a marketplace of prompts that work on platforms like ChatGPT, DALL-E 2, Midjourney, or Stable Diffusion.
  • The listings are typically a theme like “Pixar Cute Characters,” followed by a few output examples.
  • The purchasable prompts can be dozens of words long, digging into the specificity of the image or text desired — think overly-detailed instructions or a tutorial for AI.

The platform has already gained 11,000 users this month.

SEO of AI
Fast Company compares the sale of AI prompts to hiring someone to do SEO for a website — it’s all about creating a sense of reliability in your outcomes. PromptBase ensures that users get that consistency by having humans review the prompts that are put up for sale.

Artists aren’t fans, comparing the idea of selling prompts to  reverse-engineering their work (which they know datasets are trained on). Artist Dave Rapoza, a concept artist for Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise, likens it to building a car out of stolen parts.

The irony is that since Midjourney can use images as prompts, Fast Company’s Ryan Broderick was able to just copy and paste one of the output examples on the “Pixar Cute Characters” listing and generate new images… free of charge.
