The X Games could launch into new viewing platforms

The Future. Extreme sports brand The X Games has found a new owner in MSP Sports Capital, which plans to bring the Games into the digital age. With the potential inclusion of competitive gaming in the challenge lineup, don’t be surprised if you can watch professional skateboarding and professional Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater playing.

New airtime
The X Games are in search of youth viewership.

  • The Verge reports that MSP Sports Capital has acquired a majority controlling stake of the brand from ESPN.
  • ESPN will still hold a minority, non-controlling stake, with a “multi-year agreement” to show the games on its broadcast channels.
  • New CEO Steven Flisler, who used to be a VP at Twitch, may also bring the Games to the livestreaming platform as well as YouTube.
  • The hope is to “increase appeal to a digitally native audience seeking expanded access to athletes and community-driven content.”
  • Also, keeping with the Twitch vibe, competitive gaming may be introduced to the Games, which would easily make it the safest sport in the lineup.

And in a move that amazingly hasn’t happened yet, Tony Hawk — a 16-time X Games medalist — will now be an official brand steward.

The next X Games will take place from January 27the to the 29th in Aspen, Colorado.
