An AI-Generated Band Is Popular On Spotify

The Velvet Sundown currently has 400,000 monthly listeners and “debuted” less than a month ago.

The Big Picture: The band is described as a psych-rock group composed of four men. However, no evidence of the members’ existence can be found on the internet, and their content appears to be AI-generated.

Between the Lines: The band released two albums last month, on June 5 and June 20.

  • The group’s music is also available on Apple Music and Deezer — the latter platform publicly tags AI-generated music, including that of The Velvet Sundown.
  • Spotify allows AI-generated music on its platform and also doesn’t require artists to disclose when their music is AI-generated.
  • As of this writing, the band’s Spotify bio included a fabricated quote from the publication Billboard. The fake blurb claims that The Velvet Sundown manages to sound like “the memory of something you never lived and somehow make it feel real.”

Conclusion: With AI-generated music on the rise, some analysts project that musicians will lose up to a quarter of their income and work opportunities to AI-generated music.

Prediction: A lot of people hate this. But the first ones to do something about it won’t be music consumers — they’ll be established pop stars who have already come out against AI-generated music, like Dua Lipa, Elton John, and others. Prepare for some lawsuits against AI music tools or music hosting services.
