Cosm To Turn The Matrix Into An Immersive Event

Immersive entertainment company Cosm has struck a deal with Warner Bros. and creative studio Little Cinema to bring sci-fi classic The Matrix to its immersive theaters in a new “shared reality” format.

The Big Picture: While moviegoing is still recovering from its pandemic lows, cutting-edge experiential showings — IMAX, 4DX, ScreenX, etc. — are blowing up in popularity. As investment pours into constructing more of these screens, Cosm could catch a wave of interest from a new audience.

Behind the Scenes: Cosm wants you to enter the Matrix.

  • Cosm will play The Matrix in its LA and Dallas venues starting on June 6th, where it’ll play as normal but include “new elements inspired by the film,” displayed on its 87-foot diameter LED dome, per THR.
  • Tickets go on sale in mid-April and will likely fluctuate based on interest. Tickets to see the Super Bowl at Cosm theaters went for almost $1,000, while some immersive films have gone for about $50.

Closing Credits: While Cosm has focused primarily on sports, expanding into movies could provide it with more consistent business — while also giving studios the chance to profit from repertory screenings that let fans see their favorite titles in an entirely new way. Considering Sphere — the company behind the you-can-see-it-from-space venue in Vegas — is also building out smaller versions of its theaters, immersive moviegoing could become as ubiquitous a premium format as IMAX within the decade.
