Gen Z has commitment issues with jobs

The Future. Gen Z likes to move jobs at an unprecedented rate, fueling the Great Resignation (Reshuffle, Renegotiation, whatever you want to call it). That’s because they want to work somewhere flexible, healthy, and purposeful. With Gen Z set to make up a third of working adults by 2030, this shift in work philosophy could be a driving force in how companies attract young employees from here on out.

Speed working
Gen Z doesn’t feel the need to stick around at a job if it’s not working for them.

• According to LinkedIn’s chief economist, Karin Kimbrough, Gen Z workers are changing jobs 134% more than they did in 2019.
  • Millennials are switching only 24% more.
• The company also found that 25% of Gen Z workers want to change jobs within the next six months.

Even wilder, 75% say they would be willing to look for jobs in an entirely different industry than the one they currently work in. Granted, most are young enough to be nowhere near their desired career.

Clock-in culture
So, here’s the million-dollar question: what are Gen Z workers looking for?

• Flexibility. They’re 75% more likely to engage with a LinkedIn job posting that mentions “flexibility” in the description.
• Culture. They want to work in an environment that is healthy and affirming.
• Purpose. The company’s ideals have to align with their own.

And with most Gen Zers onboarding during a pandemic, remote work is cutting them off from really making deep connections with the companies they work for. Kimbrough says, “The employers need to think about how they create … mentorship and connection that will really keep Gen Zs in place.”
