SpaceX and Geometric Energy Corporation plan to shoot ads into orbit
Future. Canada’s Geometric Energy Corporation is putting an ad-projecting satellite into space via SpaceX. That’s right: brands can now advertise outside of the planet’s orbit. But the ambitions aren’t really extraterrestrial. Instead, they may be the ultimate power move to get earthbound audiences to stream the ads on services like YouTube and Twitch.
Pilot a pixel
Thanks to a little help from Elon Musk, not even space is safe from advertising.
- Musk’s SpaceX plans to launch a satellite from Canadian startup Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) that will allow brands to project ads in orbit.
- The satellite, called a CubeSat, has a pixelated display screen on one side where the ads (or logos or art) can appear.
- An entire ad can apparently fit on just one of the pixels.
- To top it off, the satellite will be equipped with a selfie stick to capture the space ads and can be livestreamed to YouTube and Twitch, so people can… you know… see it.
The satellite is set to launch on a Falcon 9 rocket in early 2022.
Doge to the moon
GEC sort of has a difficult process for actually buying space on the satellite.
- To put up an ad, interested parties need to buy five separate tokens — Beta for the X coordinate, Rho for the Y coordinate, Gamma for the brightness, Kappa for the colour, and XI for time.
- The tokens can be bought with cryptos such as Ethereum and, eventually, Dogecoin (to appease Musk, we’re sure).
- Prices are still TBD.
GEC CEO Samuel Reid said that he’s “trying to achieve something that can democratize access to space and allow for decentralized participation. Hopefully, people don’t waste money on something inappropriate, insulting or offensive.”
