Twitter Communities hatch more focused, manageable conversations
The Future. Twitter is rolling out Communities — a Groups-like feature that will help provide context, monitoring, and like-mindedness to conversations on the social platform. If the feature takes off, it could also provide the perfect platform for Spaces to find mainstream adoption and become a bonafide Clubhouse competitor.
Stay on point
Twitter is taking a page from Facebook and rolling out its own version of Facebook Groups or Reddit subreddits.
- Twitter Communities are semi-public groups that (hopefully) create a more shared foundation for conversations to take place.
- Communities include #DogTwitter, #SkincareTwitter, #AstroTwitter, and #SoleFood (for sneakerheads).
- Within Communities, users can directly tweet to other members, and only members can like and reply to tweets within the Community page.
- Each Community will have its own moderators, who can set rules and invite or remove people.
Twitter has already invited select creators to start their own Communities, and anyone can apply to start one through Twitter’s website.
Context is king
Twitter product chief Kayvon Beykpour says that the goal of Communities is to “help lower the pressure of talking on Twitter.” That’s a fair ambition when Pew Research found that only 10% of users are responsible for 80% of all tweets. General consensus is that users are afraid of being misconstrued.
Communities can hopefully provide a baseline of context to alleviate those pressures. Maybe what was needed all this time is for Twitter to be a little less open.
