The VIP of Silicon Valley’s party
The Future. Generative A.I. is helping artists produce their next masterpiece. According to the New York Times, no image-generating project has developed as much buzz (or as much controversy) as Stable Diffusion. Will this innovative tech create a wave of new job opportunities or eradicate a whole labor force?
Stable Diffusion is helping artists get unblocked.
- What separates Stable Diffusion from other text-to-image generators is that anyone can view its code or download it and run a modified version on a personal computer.
- It also comes with an easily disabled safety filter that doesn’t prevent users from creating offensive images, leading to a number of NSFW generations.
Emad Mostaque, the founder and chief executive of Stability AI (the startup behind Stable Diffusion), is opposed to the idea of having a tech giant like Google or Facebook control “the most powerful technology in the world.” Rather, he trusts the online community to engage with his image generator as they see fit.
Additionally, conventional A.I. organizations deem Mostaque’s approach as naive or reckless, pointing out that he has no educational or professional background in artificial intelligence as a former hedge fund manager.
Dream or nightmare?
In an age when little feels novel and Big Tech controls much of the internet, Mostaque believes that A.I. generated imagery, even from an unregulated source, will deliver the muse to “a creatively constipated” economy.
