Netflix is in talks with BuzzFeed’s First We Feast to stream exclusive live episodes of the hit YouTube talk show Hot Ones, which would give the streamer a major asset for its live programming ambitions.
Why It Hits: Netflix has been dipping its toes into live programming for the past couple of years, recently stepping up with deals with the NFL and WWE. But coupled with John Mulaney’s Everybody’s in LA, Netflix’s nab of Hot Ones could finally solve talk show appointment viewing in the streaming era.
Between the Wings: Netflix wants in on the viral heat of Hot Ones.
- The deal hasn’t been finalized yet, but it would have Evans host several live episodes of the show exclusively for Netflix.
- Considering the average episode brings in millions of viewers (and popular ones hit tens of millions), the deal would add some much needed spice to Netflix’s livestream efforts, and it would be a delicious draw for advertisers.
- Additionally, don’t be surprised if Netflix uses it as a way to prop up the stars of its biggest movies and TV shows.
Hot Take: Top YouTube shows like Hot Ones have been pushing to be treated with the same respect (and compensation) as similar shows on premium networks and streaming platforms. By making a partial move to Netflix, Hot Ones host Sean Evans could conquer that gauntlet… and chart a path for other YouTube-native creators.
Go Hotter: As an added bonus, the deal may be a primer for BuzzFeed to finally find a buyer for First We Feast.
