The Future. House music has been making quite the splash this summer, and some believe Beyoncé & Drake have helped shine the spotlight on the genre with their new albums. The genre is becoming a trend in pop and could be a shift toward using the most popular genre of music to comment on the cultural vibe shift… as long as you can dance to it.

According to Time, house music is making a comeback.

• Music analysts point to the fact that both Drake and Beyoncé (two artists typically at the forefront of music trends) released new albums about a month apart that were heavily influenced by house music.
• Charli XCX and DJ David Guetta have also been playing with the genre this year, so something’s in the air.

Pop artists’ move toward house music is a move away from the past decade’s glittering brightness and easy beats. House music is instead characterized by “syncopated rhythms and heavy beats” that evoke being in “low-lit, sweaty clubs where people are in close proximity to one another.”

Oh, and house is all about remixing, sampling, and recontextualizing (I mean, just look at Beyoncé’s songwriting credits on “Alien Superstar”), which is the perfect example of pop entering the TikTok era.

Move that homebody
After a couple of years isolated from others, it’s no surprise that people just want to dance less than six feet apart. And between economic uncertainty, political divisions, and more health crises, people even want to party to music that hits those topics head-on — like how “BREAK MY SOUL” became the anthem of the Great Resignation.

And artists know they have the tools to speak directly to fans (and their existential dread). Gone are the days of needing the “radio-friendly single” or sanitized lyrics. People like Beyoncé and Drake just need to send a tweet that new music is dropping… and let the Internet do the rest.
